SEO for SMBs: how to get found on Google

Sebas Vreeken9 min readMarch 2026

As an SMB owner, you know online visibility is critical. But SEO often feels complex and overwhelming. The good news: with the right approach you can make real progress without a huge budget. In this article we share the SEO strategy that genuinely works for small and medium businesses.

Why SEO matters for SMBs

More than 90% of all online experiences start with a search engine. If your business isn't findable when potential customers search for your product or service, you're losing customers to competitors every single day. Unlike paid advertising, SEO delivers structural results. Once well positioned, you enjoy months of organic traffic without ongoing ad spend.

The three pillars of SEO

SEO consists of three core areas. Each deserves attention, but you don't have to tackle all of them at once.

1. Technical SEO: the foundation

Your website needs to be technically sound before Google takes you seriously. These are the basic requirements:

  • Speed: your website should load within 2.5 seconds. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to check your current score.
  • Mobile-friendly: more than 60% of all searches happen on mobile. Your site needs to work flawlessly on smartphones.
  • SSL certificate: a secure connection (https) is a ranking factor. Without SSL, Google will rank you lower.
  • Crawlability: make sure Google can find and index all your important pages. Check your XML sitemap and robots.txt against Google's SEO guidelines.
  • Structured data: help Google understand your content better with schema markup for your business details, reviews and FAQs.

2. Content: the engine of your SEO

Content is by far the most important factor for SEO success. But not just any content. It's about valuable, relevant content that answers your audience's questions.

  • Keyword research: use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest or Ahrefs to find out what your audience is searching for.
  • Write for people, optimise for Google: your content needs to be useful first and foremost. Work keywords in naturally.
  • Long-form content wins: in-depth articles of 1,000 to 2,000 words typically outperform short pieces.
  • Publish regularly: a blog or knowledge base updated monthly signals to Google that your website is active and relevant.

3. Authority: building trust

Google wants to show the most trustworthy results. You build authority through:

  • Backlinks: links from other websites to yours. Quality beats quantity. One link from a respected industry site is worth more than ten from unknown websites.
  • Google Business Profile: optimise your Google Business Profile with current information, photos and reviews.
  • Reviews: encourage happy customers to leave a Google review. Reviews strengthen both your local SEO and your credibility.
  • Citations: make sure your business is listed in relevant industry directories.

An SEO strategy in 5 steps for SMBs

  1. Audit your current website: map out its technical state. Fix the basics first.
  2. Do keyword research: identify 10 to 20 keywords you want to rank for. Start with specific, less competitive long-tail terms.
  3. Optimise your existing pages: work keywords into titles, meta descriptions, headings and body copy. Make sure each page has unique content.
  4. Start a blog: publish at least two articles a month that answer your audience's questions.
  5. Build authority: work on your online reputation through reviews, guest posts and industry listings.

Common SEO mistakes

We regularly see the same mistakes on SMB websites:

  • No unique page titles: every page needs its own descriptive title tag.
  • Duplicate content: the same text across multiple pages confuses Google.
  • No alt text on images: Google can't see images, so describe them with alt text.
  • Neglected meta descriptions: this is your sales pitch in the search results. Make it count.
  • Impatience: clients asking after 6 weeks why they're not #1 yet. Expect 3 to 6 months for noticeable results.
Most SMBs stop doing SEO right when it starts to work.
